Carrie Smith

Technology and service design professional with more than 20 years of experience working across different sectors and industries in the UK before moving to Australia.

Her background is in product management, service design and human-centred problem-solving. These days, she is particularly interested in how technology, systems and services can be designed to work better for the people who actually use them.

She is drawn to work with social impact, particularly around communities, equality and social justice. She enjoys getting into the details of a problem, understanding how things really work, questioning assumptions and finding practical ways to improve services and systems.

She currently works at Shelter WA, helping strengthen capability across the community housing sector. She is also a board member of Sister Project, a social enterprise supporting migrant women to build independence, confidence and connection.

As a migrant herself, moving to the other side of the world has shaped her understanding of community, belonging and the challenges of starting again in a new place.

Outside of work, she is a mum to two young boys, who give her a daily lesson in negotiation, chaos management, patience and systems failure.

At heart, she is a bit of a people-and-systems nerd: curious about how things work, why they sometimes don’t, and how we can make them fairer, smarter and better for the communities around us.
